Help... We're taking on water!!!

This one has me stumped:
1. There is no water in the drip pan under the water heater.
2. The pipe draining the air conditioner condensate and the water heater drip pan is dry.
3. There was a half inch of standing water in the bottom of the furnace (about 2 gallons)
4. Water had seeped out from the furnace and was under the furnace, under the drain pan, and had dripped down into the crawl space, running down a drain pipe to the right of the water heater (not shown in this picture).
5. There was an additional 2 1/2 gallons puddled in the crawl space (fortunately none of the boxes in the crawl space got wet.
6. None of the pipes from the bathroom above the furnace room were wet; there are no signs of
So... where does 5 gallons of water come from that it ends up in the bottom of the furnace?

that sucks :( How did the boxes manage to stay dry?

The water has pooled at one end of the storage space and has not flowed uphill.

Gravity works!

More water there this morning. Looks like it may have bee underneath the plastic liner.

A/C was on "Fan only" last night.

The floor has not dried overnight, but no new water inside the furnace.

I assume there are no traces of water back to the washing machine? Even though the A/C was on fan only, it could have some residual condensation left that hadn't dripped out already.

If you look here:

there are a few people talking about very similar problems and possible solutions for you.

I like Jason's theory. I talked to a friend in the Heating/AC business. He suggests that if the A/C runs continually it could ice up, then when it stops running, it melts and puddles. He suggested that I change the filter & clean out the drainage line from the A/C so that the condensate will run into the floor drain, where it belongs.

Don't you ever go to bed at a normal hour?
(I know, RANDOM)

Here's the answer:

and yes I do go to bed at a normal hour. My time zone setting is not for a European time zone.

If you're quick, most of you can post a comment 6-8 hours before my preceding comment was posted.
