Black Rainbow

So I went to help fix a clogged bathtub... and failed.

But there's a fire in the foothills to the West, and the smoke from the fire runs to the Eastern horizon.  I had to stop and take a picture (or a set of pictures) on the way home.  Photoshop, this isn't;  cell phone camera and paint.

NOTE: This is not a "cloud". It is smoke that runs from the the west to the far east. The left (bottom) end is facing west; the right (top) end if facing east.  If you're farther north, the smoke makes an arc from east to west; this collage is taken from south of the smoke plume.

A: I found a bathtub unclog site. Based on this result, I think the next step may be worthwhile to try baking soda & vinegar: wait for the tub drain to clear out as much as it can, run a solution of baking soda (not a paste, but more like a thin batter) into the drain... give it a minute to penetrate. Slowly add a half cup to a cup of vinegar. Stand back - we've powered toy rockets with that mixture. There WILL be a reaction. Do this first thing in the morning on a day off, in case there are other adverse effects.

If that doesn't work, next best option is taking down ceiling tiles in the basement and taking off the old P-Trap. Here's a quote from the web site that I was looking at that used a similar remedy:

"Success!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!I went ahead and disconnected the black pipe where it meets the iron pipe. It had a rubber sleeve. The black gunk was solid. I took a peace of small metal pipe and hammered into the black mass. Pulled all the crusty stuff out. then i snaked for 15 ft to main drain. I made a solution of baking soda and vinegar, scrubed the hole clean then ran HOT water for 5 minutes I had both tennants run the tubs for 5 mins also smooth sailing. Thanks again for all your help."

Baking soda and vinegar... that sounds like a pretty creative solution to a slow drain. I might have to give that a try.

I found the baking soda & vinegar "cure" on the internet, so it must work.

Caution is recommended.

Well, I didn't have a whole lot of baking soda to work with, but that might be a good thing.

It worked, anyway. Either that, or using the snake to remove a hair clog so big that it actually broke the snake worked. Or some combination of the two. :)

I haven't tried it yet, but our shower has gotten worse. Now unless you plunge it after each shower it'll take at least 2 days to drain...

How about Saturday? I should be available for a good part of the day?
